Ramune is a very popular and well-known fizzy drink from Japan, that has made its way around the world in a variety of flavors. The term “Ramune” originates from the Japanese pronunciation of “lemonade.”

Where Did Ramune Come From?

 

The creator of Ramune was Alexander Cameron Sim, who initially began his career as a pharmacist. In 1884, Sim introduced a fizzy drink based on lemonade, called “mabu soda”, and the drink soon became very popular with local Japanese folks. It’s not entirely clear when Ramune itself was developed in Japan, however, the original recipe was brought to Japan by British merchant ships and then eventually adopted by the Japanese. What’s in a Bottle?

 

For many who are familiar with Ramune, the design of the bottle is the most eye-catching and unique feature. The bottle’s distinctive look is known as a Codd-neck bottle, named after the inventor, Hiram Codd. The bottles themselves are typically made out of glass, but can also be made of plastic. Instead of being sealed with a bottle cap or twist like the majority of soft drinks, Ramune are sealed with a small marble which is held in place by the pressure often carbonated liquid inside. What Kind of Flavors Are There?
 
As the popularity of Ramune continues to grow, so have the interesting variety of flavors, as well as packaging designs, including collaborations from popular Japanese characters such as Pokemon and Hello Kitty. Some of the more common flavors include peach, melon, and bubble gum; while some unusual flavors include takoyaki, curry, and wasabi. Are you curious as to what the flavor you received is all about? Lychee, also known as litchi, is a very popular fruit in Asia. Strawberry shaped with a slightly rough texture, the fruit tastes similar to grapes, strawberries, and watermelon combined with a deliciously sharp sweetness.

 

How Does the Bottle Open?

 

It may look like complicated, but once you get the hang of it, it’ll be a piece of cake! To push the marble into the bottle, a small plastic device is provided. It is inserted into the mouth of bottle, pushing the marble down; and at this point, the marble is caught into the groove of the bottle’s neck.   1. why do you put the marble in the bottle and how does it get in there and how do I buy more of the products I am sampling they taste really good and I would like some more

    1. Hi Laurie! The purpose of the marble is simply to seal the bottle, and the special production of the bottle allows it to be inserted in without falling out when you drink it! Ramune can be found at several Asian supermarkets as well as online. Hopefully we can include more in future crates! ^o^
