Traditional vs. Modern
Japan loves to create snacks based off of foods. In June’s Traditional VS Modern crate, we had some snack flavors that are well known dishes in Japan. Read on to learn a little about some popular cuisine!
Umaibo Tonkatsu Flavor
Umaibo is back and this time, it comes in a savory and sweet tonkatsu sauce flavor! Tonkatsu is a staple in Japanese cuisine and can be found on the menu at almost every Japanese restaurant. Pork cutlets are breaded and deep fried and served with a side of shredded cabbage and a thick, Worcestershire type sauce. However, unlike Worcestershire sauce, tonkatsu sauce is made with fruits and vegetables. Like ketchup in the States, this sauce can be added onto anything!
Although it’s not known why, corn potage is very popular in Japan. This creamy puréed corn soup can be found being served at Western style restaurants before an entrée or in a can from a vending machine! (There are vending machines in Japan that serve drinks hot as well as cold!) People tend to associate corn potage with cold winter days as it’s a wonderful way to warm yourself up. The Corn Potage Puffs in this month’s crate have the same creamy-sweet corn flavor without the extra heat.
Nothing smells like summer more than a barbeque! Yakiniku is considered a special treat and families often go to restaurants specializing in meat. Unlike Western barbeque, the meat is not marinated first and is cut up into bite sized pieces. Typical yakiniku tare, or sauce, is made up of a mixture of soy sauce, rice wine, sugar, garlic, and sesame seeds. We found these chips to have a savory flavor and satisfied our craving for barbeque! No grill necessary!
Before Japan had its ever expanding candy industry, sweets were fairly simple. Condensed milk was used a lot as a topping for toast, strawberries, and shaved ice! The combination of condensed milk and matcha makes for a nostalgic flavor for many Japanese people.
